Case Study:
GeoVision’s Role in Cross-Border Rail Modernization in Slovakia
ETCS (European Train Control System) is the cornerstone of European railway modernization, designed to replace different national signaling systems with a single standard that works across European countries.
Previously, Slovakia's section of the Rhine–Danube Corridor ended at Varín, leaving a gap in cross-border rail operations. This project extended the corridor by 330 km to the Ukrainian border, connecting the route from Bratislava to the border and placing Slovakia in a stronger position within the European logistics network.
As part of the €40M+ EU-funded Rhine–Danube Corridor infrastructure upgrade, critical BTS (Base Transceiver Station) sites along the 330 km route required centralized video surveillance and 24/7 automated intrusion monitoring.
Project Needs
The project required a monitoring approach designed to operate across long distances and multiple sites, aligned with the needs of modern railway operations.
1
Centralized Monitoring Across a 330 km Corridor
The monitoring system must cover the entire 330 km northern corridor, with all camera feeds reliably consolidated into a single centralized system.
2
Automated Monitoring for Critical Facilities
Critical railway facilities require automated detection to identify intrusions, enabling immediate intervention while reducing reliance on on-site manpower.
3
Proven for Large-Scale Deployment
The system must handle high-resolution video streams and large data volumes with efficient storage, and be backed by a proven deployment record.
4
Integration into Railway Management Systems
The monitoring system must integrate into the railway’s higher-level management systems and operate as part of the railroad management framework.
💡 The Challenge: Connecting security to other complex operational systems
The Solution
A Unified Security Platform for Daily Operations
GV-VMS | Centralized Video Monitoring
All GeoVision IP cameras deployed along the rail route are centrally recorded and managed through the GV-VMS V18 platform, providing a unified environment for monitoring distributed railway facilities.
GeoVision IP Cameras | Automated Intrusion Detection
GeoVision IP cameras deliver high-resolution video with built-in analytics, enabling automated intrusion detection and timely response while reducing reliance on manual monitoring.
GV-VMS Server | Scalable Recording and Storage
The GV-VMS V18 server platform supports high-resolution video streams and large data volumes with efficient storage management, ensuring stable, continuous operation across large-scale deployments.
System Integration
The GeoVision video surveillance system, including intruder alarms, integrates into the railway management systems used by the Railways of the Slovak Republic (ŽSR), allowing video monitoring to operate as part of the overall rail management framework.
Results
A unified security platform protecting Slovakia's critical railway infrastructure along the Rhine–Danube Corridor.
Deployment Scale
Extended coverage across a 330 km corridor, centralizing monitoring for all GSM-R facilities under a single platform.
System Status
Fully operational since October 2025, delivering 24/7 automated protection across all GSM-R base stations.
Integration Success
Seamlessly integrated into ŽSR's railway management systems, offering a unified monitoring interface for operations staff.
